Astrology Essay -- essays research papers
The basic astrological assumptions are not hard to grasp. For if astronomy is the study of the movements of the heavenly bodies, then astrology is the study of the effects of those movements. The astronomers of the ancient world assumed a division of the universe whereby the superior, immutable bodies of the celestial worlds ruled over the terrestrial or sublunary sphere, where all was mortality and change. It was assumed that the stars had special qualities and influences which were transmitted downwards upon the passive earth, and which varied in their effect, according to the changing relationship of the heavenly bodies to each other. They were led to postulate a single system in which the seven moving stars or planet shifted their position in relation to the earth and each other, against a fixed backcloth of the twelve signs of the zodiac. There was nothing obscure about these general assumptions. At the beginning of the sixteenth century astrological doctrines were part of the educated manââ¬â¢s picture of the universe and its workings. It was generally accepted that the four elements constituting the sublunary region (earth, air, fire & water) were kept in their state of ceaseless transformation by the movement of the heavenly bodies. The various planets transmitted different quantities of the four physiological qualities of heat and cold, dryness and moisture. Therefore astrology was less a separate discipline than an aspect of a generally accepted world picture. During the Renaissance, even more than in the Middle Ages, astrology pervaded all aspects of the intellectual framework in which men were educated. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries there were four main branches of judicial astrology. First, there were the general predictions based on the future movements of the ravens and taking note of such impending events as eclipses of the sun and moon. These forecasts related to the weather, the state of the crops, mortality and epidemics, politics and war. They indicated the fate of society as a whole but not that of particular individuals. Secondly, there were nativities, maps of the sky at the moment of a personââ¬â¢s births either made on the spot at the request of the infants' parents' or reconstructed for individuals of stature, those who could supply the details of their time of births. The horoscope at b... ...nglish churches and may have helped to shape popular religious attitudes. Pictures of the sun and moon were found in several Suffolk churches and the churches themselves were built to face the rising sun. How far such practices affected menââ¬â¢s basic beliefs it is difficult to tell. Anne Bodenham, who was executed for witchcraft at Salisbury in 1653 was a former servant of the astrologer John Lambe, she had long practiced as a cunning woman, claiming to be able to do more than Master Lilly or anyone whatsoever. When she dealt with a maid who had convulsive fits, she is reported to have proposed a frankly pagan remedy -prayer to Jupiter, the best and fortunatest of all the planets'. Even more striking is another Wiltshire case, which came before the quarter sessions in 1656. A Lacock weaver, Wllllam Bond was charged with atheism and blasphemy, and in particular with publicly affirming that ââ¬Ëthere was no God or power ruling above the planets, no Christ but the sun that shines upon us'; and 'that the twelve patriarchs were the twelve houses'. "This was astrology run wild; and it is tantalizing not to know how many of William Bond's contemporaries may have held similar vie ws.

ââ¬Å"Florida State University, here we come!â⬠Fort Lauderdale to Tallahassee, what a trip! On the road againâ⬠¦blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, on the road again, that damn song always in my head when weââ¬â¢re going on a long bus ride. I should figure out the words in between, but Iââ¬â¢m always too lazy. Now that I think about it, I still have two cases to write if I want debate. Mr. Wakefield would kill me if he knew Iââ¬â¢m going to a huge state tournament unprepared. Iââ¬â¢m not worried, Iââ¬â¢ll do it after the first stopâ⬠¦Iââ¬â¢m tired now anyways. Iââ¬â¢ll just take a little nap. I woke up because of all the noiseâ⬠¦weââ¬â¢re at the first stop. Itââ¬â¢s been four hours?! Iââ¬â¢m still tired, so, I put my head back again. Once again, I woke up because of the noiseâ⬠¦weââ¬â¢re at the second stop now. I slept through another four hours, I canââ¬â¢t believe it, and I didnââ¬â¢t get anything done! Iââ¬â¢m not worried , Iââ¬â¢ll write my cases after this stopâ⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢m hungry anyways. So, I ate a bunch of snacks, listened to my Walkman, and went back to the bus. Iââ¬â¢m just going to relax right now; my head hurts and my stomach is full. Here we are, Tallahassee, Florida! Itââ¬â¢s okay, Iââ¬â¢m not worried, once we eat dinner and settle in our hotel rooms, Iââ¬â¢ll write my cases. So, we eat dinner, get our rooms, unpack, and now Iââ¬â¢m way too tired to write my casesâ⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢ll write before the tournament tomorrow. The tournament is about to start and I still donââ¬â¢t have any cases readyâ⬠¦itââ¬â¢s okay; I can write it before my rounds. I look over to the side and see someone posting the rounds up. All right, rounds are going to start in fifteen minutes and I donââ¬â¢t have my cases ready ââ¬â okay, now it is time to panic! Well, I always said I work better under pressureâ⬠¦obviously, a lot of pressure. I sit down and Iââ¬â¢m writing as fast as I possibly can. Wow, so many ideasâ⬠¦my hand canââ¬â¢t keep up! I can smell the smoke coming from the pencil grinding on my notepad. I can hear myself rooting for myselfâ⬠¦go, go, go, go, Usilia youââ¬â¢re awesome! Okay, itââ¬â¢s time to go to my round, so I plot my butt down next to the door and continue writing. When my opponent gets there, I tilt my notepad so he doesnââ¬â¢t see what Iââ¬â¢m writing.

The Return: Midnight Chapter 37
Then Meredith saw something that was not smoke or fire. Just a glimpse of a door frame ââ¬â and a tiny breath of cool air. With this hope to sustain her, she scuttled straight for the door to the backyard, dragging Isobel behind her. As she passed the threshold, she felt blessedly cold water somehow showering down onto her body. When she pul ed Isobel into the spray, the younger girl made the first voluntary sound she had during the entire journey: a wordless sob of thanks. Matt's hands were helping her along, were taking away the burden of Isobel. Meredith got up to her feet and staggered in a circle, then dropped to her knees. Her hair was on fire! She was just recal ing her childhood rehearsal of stop, drop, and rol , when she felt the cold water turned on it. The hose water went up and down her body and she turned around, basking in the feeling of coolness, until she heard Matt's voice say, ââ¬Å"The flames are out. You're good now.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you, Matt. Thank you.â⬠Her voice was hoarse. ââ¬Å"Hey, you were the one who had to go al the way to the bedrooms and back. Getting Mrs. Saitou out was pretty easy ââ¬â there was the kitchen sink ful of water, so as soon as I cut her free from the kitchen chair we just got al wet and dashed outside.â⬠Meredith smiled and looked around quickly. Isobel had become her responsibility now. To her relief, she saw that the girl was being hugged by her mother. And al it had taken was the nonsense choice between a thing ââ¬â however precious it was ââ¬â and a life. Meredith gazed at the mother and daughter and was glad. She could have another stave made. But nothing could replace Isobel. ââ¬Å"Isobel said to give this to you,â⬠Matt was saying. Meredith turned toward him, the fiery light making the world crazy, and for one moment didn't believe her eyes. Matt was holding the fighting stave out to her. ââ¬Å"She must have dragged it with her free hand ââ¬â oh, Matt, and she was almost dead before we startedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Matt said, ââ¬Å"She's stubborn. Like someone else I know.â⬠Meredith wasn't quite sure what he meant by that, but she knew one thing. ââ¬Å"We'd al better get to the front yard. I doubt the volunteer fire department is going to come. Besides ââ¬â Theo ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I'l get them moving. You scout the gate side,â⬠Matt said. Meredith plunged into the backyard, which was hideously il uminated by the house, now ful y engulfed in flames. Fortunately, the side yard was not. Meredith flicked the gate open with the stave. Matt was right behind her, helping Mrs. Saitou and Isobel along. Meredith quickly ran by the flaming garage and then stopped. From behind her she heard a cry of horror. There was no time to try to soothe whoever had cried, no time to think. The two fighting women were too busy to notice her ââ¬â and Theo was in need of help. Inari was truly like a fiery Medusa, with her hair writhing around her in flaming, smoking snakes. Only the crimson part burned, and it was that part that she was using like a whip, using one snake to wrest away the silver bul whip from Theo's hand, and then another to wrap around Theo's throat and choke her. Theo was desperately trying to pul the blazing noose from her neck. Inari was laughing. ââ¬Å"Are you suffering, petty witch? It wil al be over in seconds ââ¬â for you and for your entire little town! The Last Midnight has final y come!â⬠Meredith glanced back at Matt ââ¬â and that was al it took. He ran forward, passing her, al the way up to the space below the fighting women. Then he bent slightly, cupping his hands. And then Meredith sprinted, putting everything she had left into the short run, leaving her just enough energy to leap and place one foot into Matt's cupped hands, and then she felt herself soaring aloft, just within distance for the stave to slice cleanly through the snake of hair that was choking Theo. After that Meredith was in free fal , with Matt trying to catch her from below. She landed more or less on top of him and they both saw what happened next. Theo, who was bruised and bleeding, slapped out a part of her gown that was smoldering. She held out a hand for the silver bul whip and it flew to meet her outstretched fingers. But Inari wasn't attacking. She was waving her arms wildly, as if in terror, and then suddenly she shrieked: a sound so anguished that Meredith drew in her breath sharply. It was a death-scream. Before their eyes she was turning back into Obaasan, into the shrunken, helpless, dol -like woman Matt and Meredith knew. But by the time this shriveled body hit the ground it was already stiff and dead, her expression one of such unrepentant malice that it was frightening. It was Isobel and Mrs. Saitou then who came forward to stand over the body, sobbing with relief. Meredith looked at them and then up at Theo, who slowly floated to the ground. ââ¬Å"Thank you,â⬠Theo said with the faintest of smiles. ââ¬Å"You have saved me ââ¬â yet again.â⬠ââ¬Å"But what do you think happened to her?â⬠Matt asked. ââ¬Å"And why didn't Shinichi or Misao come to help her?â⬠ââ¬Å"I think they al must be dead, don't you?â⬠Theo's voice was soft over the roar of the flames. ââ¬Å"As for Inari ââ¬â I think that perhaps someone destroyed her star bal . I'm afraid I was not strong enough to defeat her myself.â⬠ââ¬Å"What time is it?â⬠Meredith abruptly cried, remembering. She ran to the old SUV, which was Stillrunning. Its clock showed 12:00 midnight exactly. ââ¬Å"Did we save the people?â⬠Matt asked desperately. Theo turned her face outward toward the center of the town. For nearly a minute she was Still, as if listening for something. At last, when Meredith felt that she might shatter from tension, she turned back and said quietly, ââ¬Å"Dear Ma ma, Grand mama, and I are one, now. I sense children who are finding themselves holding knives ââ¬â and some with guns. I sense them standing in their sleeping parents'rooms, unable to remember how they got there. And I sense parents, hiding in closets, a moment ago frightened for their very lives, who are seeing weapons dropped and children fal ing onto master bedroom floors, sobbing and bewildered.â⬠ââ¬Å"We did it, then. You did it. You held her off,â⬠Matt panted. Stillgentle and sober, Theo said, ââ¬Å"Someone else ââ¬â far away ââ¬â did much more. I know that the town needs healing. But Grand mama and Ma ma agree. Because of them, no child has kil ed a parent this night, and no parent has kil ed a child. The long nightmare of Inari and her Last Midnight is over.â⬠Meredith, grimy and bedraggled as she was, felt something rise and swell inside her, bigger and bigger, until, for al her training, she couldn't contain herself any longer. It exploded out of her in a yel of exultation. She found that Matt was shouting too. He was as grubby and unkempt as she was, but he seized her by the hands and whirled her around in a barbarian victory dance. And it was fun, whirling around and yel ing like a kid. Maybe ââ¬â maybe in trying to be calm, in always being the most grown-up, she had missed out on the essence of fun, which always felt as if it had some childlike quality to it. Matt had no trouble in expressing his feelings, whatever they were: childlike, mature, stubborn, happy. Meredith found herself admiring this, and also thinking that it had been a long time since she'd real y looked at Matt. But now she felt a sudden wave of feeling for him. And she could see that Matt felt the same way about her. As if he'd never real y looked at her properly before. This was the momentâ⬠¦when they were meant to kiss. Meredith had seen it so often in movies, and read about it in books, that it was almost a given. But this was life, it wasn't a story. And when the moment came, Meredith found herself holding Matt's shoulders while he held hers, and she could see that he was thinking exactly the same thing about the kiss. The moment stretchedâ⬠¦ Then, with a grin, Matt's face showed that he knew what to do. Meredith did too. They both moved in, and hugged each other. When they drew back, they were both grinning. They knew who they were. They were very different, very close friends. Meredith hoped that they always would be. They both turned to look at Theo, and Meredith felt a pang in her heart, the first since she had heard they'd saved the town. Theo was changing. It was the look on her face as she watched them that gave Meredith the pang. After being young, and while watching youth at its peak, she was once again aging, wrinkling, her hair going white instead of moonlit silver. At last, she was an old woman wearing a raincoat covered with bits of paper. ââ¬Å"Mrs. Flowers!â⬠This person, it was perfectly safe and right to kiss. Meredith flung her arms about the frail old woman, lifting her off her feet in excitement. Matt joined them, and they boosted her above their heads. They carried her like this to the Saitous, mother and daughter, who were watching the fire. There, sobered, they put her down. ââ¬Å"Isobel,â⬠Meredith said. ââ¬Å"God! I'm so sorry ââ¬â your homeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Thank you,â⬠Isobel said in her soft, slurred voice. Then she turned away. Meredith felt chil ed. She was even beginning to regret the celebration, when Mrs. Saitou said, ââ¬Å"Do you know, this is the greatest moment in the history of our family? For hundreds of years, that ancient kitsune ââ¬â oh, yes, I've always known what she was ââ¬â has been forcing herself upon innocent humans. And for the last three centuries it has been my family line of samurai mikos that she has terrorized. Now my husband can come home at last.â⬠Meredith looked at her, startled. Mrs. Saitou nodded. ââ¬Å"He tried to defy her and she banished him from the house. Ever since Isobel was born, I have feared for her. And now, please forgive her. She has trouble expressing what she feels.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know about that,â⬠Meredith said quietly. ââ¬Å"I'l go have a little talk with her, if it's All right.â⬠If ever in her life she could explain to a fel ow traveler what fun having fun was, she thought, it was now.

College Graduation Essay
I had been waiting for this morning to come for four years. In a few hours it came and went, but it was an important time in my life. Graduation day was the end of one life and the beginning of a new life with different problems, worries and joys. While walking in the theater, I had seen hundreds of parents, grandparents, children, and even alumni studentsââ¬â¢. My family was there, excited and cheering for me because I had finally made it. I was backstage getting ready for the walk on stage and thinking that I had finally reached the one day that would end college life and start a new life in the workplace. The time came for all the graduates to line up and start heading on stage to begin the ceremony. The walk to the podium seemed to take forever, as if we were waiting in line at Cedar Point. I just wanted to get my college degree, and get the day over with, but we had to wait for the band to start playing as well as the Valedictorians and Salutatorians to begin. I was excited and scared at the same time because I knew that once I walked across that stage everything would be different. The sound of the cheering, the stately music, the solemn atmosphere, and the joy of the students all play a part in creating this spectacle. It had represented the culmination of years of our hard work, careful planning, and studiousness. We must say goodbye to the fun and excitement of college days and enter the real world. As graduates, weââ¬â¢re reminded of duty to uphold and the finest traditions of the university and act in a spirit of honesty and integrity. During the graduation exercise I became bored. Crazy thoughts started roaming through my head while sitting there. Such as; ââ¬Å"oh my godâ⬠I hope I donââ¬â¢t trip and fall in these six inch black heels, Iââ¬â¢m nervous; hundredths of people will be staring as I walk across that stage. Just before I knew it; ââ¬Å"Good morning staff, parents, and fellow graduates. This year, you seniors have come a long way,â⬠Ms. Pierce, our vice president at the university, droned into the microphone. Ms. Pierce is a tall, thick, brown-skinned woman, who Iââ¬â¢ve always known throughout my four years there at the university. As she went on babbling about how proud she was, and how hard weââ¬â¢d worked, all I could think about was how I had longed for this moment to finally come, I was still somewhat startled and amazed by this brilliant event. This eventually brought small joyful tears to my eyes. Just a few days earlier, I had been counting down the days to graduation. ââ¬Å"Only two days left before graduation, and four weeks and four days left until summer! â⬠I shouted out as I began marking off the May days in my calendar. Waiting to be called up then all of a sudden I heard: Tamar Perryman, with a loud applause and smiling faces of excitement. Walking up to get my degree as well as shaking the vice presidents hand with a firm grip. Finally I had overcome my fear and accepted my bachelorââ¬â¢s degree! About an hour later, our graduating class threw our caps up. As a sign of excitement, It was now time to party afterwards; I and some of my other classmates went from one friend party to the next following the commencement. When walking towards the backyard I had smelled barbeque from the grill, and boy did it smelled delicious. My stomach started to growl and I knew that was a sign to hurry and smash. I also noticed the beautiful dandelions off by the side of the garage. Picnics tables were set with decorated signs that read ââ¬Å"Congrats youââ¬â¢ve made itâ⬠balloons were pinned up, soft music was playing from the garage Adults were gathered around taking pictures with friends and family. Several parentsââ¬â¢ and grandparentsââ¬â¢ attend to share their excitement as well, gifts were brought from office supplies to home house ware appliances. By midnight I was extremely tired from what a long day, I knew today would be a memory that I would never forget about while lying in my queen size sleigh bed. Before dozing off to sleep, I started thinking about what hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities I was going to apply to first thing in the morning.

According to Great Expectations Essay
As a mother figure, we would expect her to be a stereotypical Victorian Woman. Not only would she have to do all the domestic work, but also care and nurture her children, or in this case Pip. However, this is not quite the case with Mrs Joe. In many cases, when a mother brings up her child ââ¬Å"by hand,â⬠she would care and nurture for her child with a lot of love. Mrs Joe however, has adopted a different style of bringing up Pip, ââ¬Å"by handâ⬠. She hits and slaps Pip, to bring him into line, and there is no evidence in the story that shows Mrs Joe loves Pip like she is expected to. This distant relationship is shown in the above quote. As Mrs Joe has an apron full of needles and pins, Pip cannot get close to her physically, and so this image of a young child clinging to its motherââ¬â¢s apron, is lost. This shows that as a woman in the Victorian times, this expectation of caring and nurturing your child with love is highly expected, but Dickensââ¬â¢ has created a character that has completely overturned any expectation. As mentioned before, the image of a Victorian Woman is very stereotypical, but in Dickensââ¬â¢ book, this is reversed because in ch 22 we see Mrs Pocket doing the total opposite. Although we do not see her or anyone do the housework, we can assume that because of the wealth her and her husband have that hired help is doing the domestic work. In the family, there are a number of young children who need to be nurtured by their mother, but always seem to be handed to the nannies, while she does something or the other, like reading a book about class. A subject that seems very important to her, maybe because of her up bringing in the higher-class society. ââ¬Å"Mrs Pocket was sitting on a garden chair under a tree, reading, with her legs upon another garden chair; and Mrs Pocketââ¬â¢s two nursemaids, were looking about them while the children playedâ⬠pg 186. The dependence on money is probably the main factor of how high a persons position is in society. This shows that Victorian Woman of high class know what little domestic work they have to do, and this is all due to their great wealth that they have. The dependence on money, and position in society is linked, represented by other various Victorian Women in the book. Mrs Joe seemed to be very excited about the fact that Pip had been invited over to a rich ladyââ¬â¢s house (Miss Havisham), and immediately questioned him about how it went, after his first meeting with her. She thought that because of Pip meeting with her, maybe she could have some kind of ââ¬Å"connectionâ⬠with her, and the higher class. Ch 8 ââ¬Å"With that she pounced upon me, like an eagle on a lamb, and my face was squeezed into wooden bowls in sinks, and my head was put under water butts, and I was soaped and kneaded, and towelledâ⬠¦ â⬠pg 52. This shows that she wanted to make a good impression, to make herself look good through Pip, by how neat and well he looked, because of her efforts. A woman of a low class feels the need to know a person of much higher status than them, because they know about the great amount of luxury, the higher class live in, and the amount of wealth they have which could lead them (the lower class) to have a brighter future. Finally, we learn about Molly, Clara, and Miss Skiffins. Molly, as we soon find out is Estellaââ¬â¢s mother, a former convict and now Jaggersââ¬â¢ housekeeper. This makes Estellaââ¬â¢s position in society lower because of her family. Not much is known about her. Clara, Herbertââ¬â¢s wife is someone we can assume as being like Biddy, but not at all influential upon Pip, like Biddy. Finally Miss Skiffins, Wemmickââ¬â¢s wife is also one of the characters we know very little about, but looks after Wemmickââ¬â¢s father, the stereotypical image of a housewife is shown in ââ¬Å"Great Expectationsâ⬠very well. Usually a female, a housekeeper, is one who obeys her master, and does not intrude in what is going on in her masterââ¬â¢s affairs. This is shown in Molly and Jaggers relationship, although she has to do this as Jaggers is doing this as a favour. So as shown, there are many sides to a Victorian woman in this novel, and a few of the main characters that are influential on Pip, are very cold hearted, (Estella, Miss Havisham and Mrs Joe). I believe that Miss Havisham is so pitiless and spiteful that she adopted a young girl to seek out revenge on all men, just because of what happened to her. I also think that this book explores the many sides of a Victorian Woman very well, because the stereotypical image of Victorian Women being those who stay at home and do all the domestic work is overturned. 1)*According to Great Expectations what is a ââ¬Å"Gentlemenâ⬠? In Great Expectations the word ââ¬Å"Gentlemenâ⬠is shown in many different ways by different characters. You can tell this by the things they say, what they do and what others say about them. The main people who show this are Pip, Joe and Magwitch. Pip Pumblechook ââ¬â Throughout the rest of the novel, he will shamelessly take credit for Pipââ¬â¢s rise in social status, even though he has nothing to do with it, since Magwitch, not Miss Havisham, is Pipââ¬â¢s secret benefactor. Drummle In his mind, Pip has connected the ideas of moral, social, and educational advancement so that each depends on the others. The coarse and cruel Drummle, a member of the upper class, provides Pip with proof that social advancement has no inherent connection to intelligence or moral worth. Drummleââ¬â¢s negative example helps Pip to see the inner worth of characters such as Magwitch and Joe, and eventually to discard his immature fantasies about wealth and class in favor of a new understanding that is both more compassionate and more realistic.

A Journal opinion article - Essay Example The first three months of the year experienced decline in spending by domestic household in the United States as reported by the commerce department. The decline in consumption dropped from the estimated 3.6 percent to 2.6percent as the CNBC reported. The commerce department reported massive decline spending in crucial sectors, notably the service sector based on the report by CNBC, consumers decreased their spending in legal services, health care and more so in personal care. One of the major causes of the consumption decline could have been the new taxation law. The increase in the social security tax at the beginning of the year could have limited the extent to which households spend within the first quarter. The tax increase lowered directly the amount of income that households would take home at end of the day. After taxation, consumers were left with only meager income; these consumers choose to concentrate on basic commodities only (Morrissey 1). As opposed to earlier projecti ons that had showed increase in the amount export for first quarter, the latest report indicated otherwise. The department of commence statistics indicated that export decreased indeed to 1.1percent while imports also declined to 0.4 percent. The decrease in export translated to limited foreign currency at the disposal of the government for the country to trade with other countries. Consequently, the fall in imports resulted to decrease in foreign revenue. Both reductions in export and import negative effects on the countryââ¬â¢s gross domestic product and contributed to the drop in the figure that had been projected for the first quarter to be 2.4percent (Morrissey 1). Amid concerns that the government was cutting its spending, consumers could have become more reserved in their spending. Government spending cut could lead to increase in the prices of commodities that had been earlier subsidized. A decrease in governmentââ¬â¢s spending could also result to households paying fo r basic services that were being catered for by the state prior to cut in spending. Vis a Vis the speculation of the government cutting its spending motivated a decline in consumption by consumers that further led to drop in the GDP of the first quarter. However, according to the wall street journal, the cut in governments spending which took effect in first month of the first quarter led to direct deduction of 0.9 percent off the growth rate (BBC 1). Due to economical globalization of the world, there existed unprecedented events all over the world that were bound to destabilize the projected GDP by department of commerce. Economic instability in states such as china and European countries could have contributed to gravitation of the united states GDP to 1.8 percent. With globalization, no single economy can exist in solitary in the 21st century. Hence, through globalization, the myriad of macroeconomics factors derailing the Chinese economy and euro zone states such as Greece adve rsely influenced the bilateral trade between these countries. The decrease in the annual economic growth of china triggered the decline in trade between the two countries. On the other hand, the worsening conditions of euro zone states such as Greece continued to shift trade further away from the European countries causing down surge in the amount of investments by Americans in the oversees (BBC 1). UCLA - Essay Example However, the magnitude of the compromised ethics on the situations differs from one segment to the other. Among the five segments the most ethically compromised situation is act two in which the two businesses talked about have a silent partner. One of the businesses, Chadââ¬â¢s business has Chad as a business partner. This results to unethical undertakings like placing his picture on the business and wearing t-shirts with his name and yet he is dead. The action sets superstition that causes it to be unethical thus influencing the running of the business. Unlike other situations where few individuals compromise ethics, in this segment all the individuals involved in the business compromise ethics. Everybody was wearing a shirt with Chadââ¬â¢s name; the activity of every person involved was shaped by Chad who died before the business started. This makes the segment ideal for explaining an ethically compromised situation. Family businesses are very different in characteristics when compared to other types of businesses. One of the characteristics that makes them unique is that they require succession after a certain period. The business is passed from an incumbent senior generation to a next generation of leadership or ownership (Ward 3). This provides a challenge and opportunities that are rare in other kinds of businesses. Another thing that makes family business rather unique is that unlike the public companies owned by investors who are the main shareholders, this business has an individual owner or a team of owners who are family members. According to Gersick (1), these owners play a very different role from that played by shareholders. They directly influence the running of the business and general performance of the employee of that business which is not the role of the shareholders in the public companies. Family ties prohibit a person from doing certain things to certain members of his family. Private enterprises
